Abstract



 Big Research Question
How can letterforms be understood beyond fixed linguistic signs?

This research project begins with the question, “How can letterforms be understood beyond fixed linguistic signs?” Rather than treating letters as stable symbols that simply transmit language, it approaches them as fluid units of reading shaped by the conditions of sensation, tools, the body, and space. Through four perspectives — structure, legibility, surface, and relationality — the project explores how written forms produce meaning and how they are perceived.

It first reconsiders the formal and axial logic that constitutes letters, proposing alternative ways in which written forms may be constructed. It then moves across the boundary between text and graphics, examining how the conditions of reading and recognition can become unstable and be reconfigured. By focusing on the surface and contour of letters, the project unsettles conventional modes of form recognition and explores the new impressions and atmospheres that may emerge from this shift. Finally, through the relationship between letters, the body, and space, it reveals legibility not as a fixed attribute of the letter itself, but as an event that arises through position and movement. In doing so, the project expands the letterform beyond a singular typographic shape into a relational and sensory field of reading, where typography becomes a way of testing how written language is sensed, recognized, and reconfigured.
